Bah humbug! Reasons why Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol has enduring appeal
Ba humbug! Not my thoughts on Yuletide, far from it, rather a quote from my favourite seasonal story A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
As soon as my Advent calendar is open on December 1, I take down the story of the miserly Ebeneezer Scrooge who is shown the error of his mean ways by three ghosts and embraces the joy of Christmas.

These are the reasons I love it:
1 The novella’s timeless themes of compassion and social justice and its lasting impact on modern Christmas traditions. His character arc from a miser to a generous man is a powerful narrative of transformation, while the story’s critique of greed and inequality continues to resonate today.
2 The story’s core message is that anyone can change for the better, a universally appealing theme of hope and personal growth.
3 Social commentary: Dickens captures the good and evils of the Victorian era perfectly. He always does – read alsi Olive Twist! Great Expectations and The Old Curiosity Shop.
4 Christmas spirit: A Christmas Carol helped shape modern Christmas into a holiday focused on charity, generosity and kindness. Parties, dancing, gifts and time for family and friends. Dickens has been called ‘the man who invented Christmas.
5 Memorable characters: Scrooge is an unforgettable character whose name has become synonymous with stinginess. Tiny Tim and his dad Bob Cratchit embody generosity and kindness.
6 The novella is one of the most famous and enduring works associated with Christmas, inspiring countless adaptations across films, musicals and plays.
