Leeds’ indie cinemas launch ‘Cinema Crawl’

Four of Leeds’ most iconic independent cinemas are coming together to launch the city’s first ever Cinema Crawl on Sunday September 22.

The Crawl, which will show four different films at four different film venues, aims to offer film lovers a full day of cinematic thrills at venues including Cottage Road, Hyde Park Picture House, Archive, and Howard Assembly Room. Each venue will be showcasing a film that embodies the day’s theme “Journeys”.

  • Starting at 11am, Cottage Road Cinema will show Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom
  • At 2pm, Hyde Park Picture House will present Alfonso Cuarón’s critically acclaimed road film Y tu Mamá También
  • At 5pm, Archive, on Kirkstall Road, will screen the satirical comedy Lost in America.
  • The day concludes at 8pm at Howard Assembly Room with the cult classic But I’m a Cheerleader, followed by a post-crawl quiz.

Gary Benn, Manager of the Cottage Road said: ‘We’re so thrilled to be teaming up with three other amazing venues. Leeds has such a vibrant film scene and this gives us the opportunity to work together to showcase each of our own unique programming styles.”

Wendy Cook, Head of Cinema at Hyde Park Picture House added: “The history of cinema is one big tapestry, collaborative curation allows us to highlight and celebrate the way the different threads weave in and around one another which ultimately contributes to the beauty of the whole”

The Leeds Cinema Crawl is not just about watching great films; it’s an opportunity to explore the city through its cinematic history and diverse cultural spaces. Each venue has it’s own story, atmosphere and programming philosophy making this an unmissable event for everyone looking to experience the best of what cinema has to offer in Leeds.

“Leeds is a very rich city for cinephiles - it’s where film was invented after all - and I think a tour of some of its finest cinema spaces will be an excellent showcase for newcomers. Lost in America to me is one of the great road movies and an ideal introduction to the genius of Albert Brooks.” Said Pete from Scour Cinema and Scalarama Leeds.

“We have some surprises and fun extras planned throughout the day.” Said Nathan Shipley, Duty Manager at Cottage Road Cinema.

The Crawl takes places across Leeds on September 22 from 11am-10pm. Tickets and further information are available at cinemacrawl.co.uk.
