I returned to Leeds' historic White Swan pub - and remembered exactly why it's a city centre classic
The White Swan may currently be hidden from view, but its historic charm still shines inside
While new pubs and bars open left and right in the city centre, it’s easy to forget some of its long-running favourites. So when I found myself shopping on Briggate on a busy Friday, I decided to return to an old haunt I haven’t visited in a long time.
The White Swan markets itself as one of Leeds’ oldest pubs and is located right next to the City Varieties. With both venues currently hiding behind scaffolding, it’s easy to forget they’re there in the first place, save for the painted wall opposite the entrance door.

Its stylish decor strikes a confident balance between modern flair and vintage charm. As soon as you step through the frosted glass door, a polished piano, decorative walls, and handsome bookshelves create an inviting first impression.
Although normally a popular drinking spot, the pub is nearly empty on our early Friday afternoon visit. So with the exception of a couple enjoying a tipple in a corner, there’s no shortage of table space to choose from.
The bar is well-stocked with a good selection of beers and ciders on draught, including Leeds Brewery, Northern Monk, regulars such as Guinness and Aspall, and craft beers from America and beyond. Those looking for something bottled have a good range of wines and spirits to choose from.
Ordering at the bar was quick and easy, with a friendly bartender at hand. Prices are also comfortable for a city centre venue, with a pint of lager and a cider setting us back £12.
The fairly new in-house lager, The Swan Lager, catches my attention. Light and crispy, it’s one of those where a one-pint stop could turn into a five-pint stop. Luckily, its 3.5% ABV ensures the office won't be too much of a burden in the morning.

Being situated right next to City Varieties, which is rumoured to be one of Leeds’ most haunted venues, my guest on the occasion was hoping for a supernatural appearance. I’m sad to report that even the toilets, which the pub shares with the haunted theatre, remained phantasm-free.
I’ve not been here for a while, but I’m sure I’ll be back soon. Maybe for the weekly piano pub quiz, or just to soak in the charming atmosphere.
The White Swan might currently be faceless and a bit more hidden than it’s used to. But the historic pub remains one of the city’s classics - haunted or not.
