If you’ve ever wondered how Aldi manages to keep prices low while still attracting staff in a tight jobs market, its latest pay move offers a clue.
The discount supermarket has confirmed it will raise wages for store workers from Sunday, March 1, weeks before the national minimum wage increases in April.
Starting pay for Aldi store assistants will rise by 33p an hour, from £13.02 to £13.35. That early uplift means thousands of staff will see their hourly pay increase by a total of 64p when the minimum wage rises to £12.71 an hour for workers aged 21 and over next month.
For shoppers, it’s another sign of Aldi doubling down on its promise to balance low prices with investment in staff, a strategy the retailer says underpins its customer service and value credentials.

Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive Giles Hurley said staff are “at the heart of everything we do”, adding that the supermarket is making a “significant investment” to ensure it is never beaten on pay.
The supermarket, now the UK’s fourth largest, enjoyed £1.65 billion in sales over the Christmas period and says it is investing £36 million into pay and benefits this year.
Alongside the headline pay rise, Aldi is extending maternity pay to 26 weeks at full pay, while store apprentices will see their hourly wage rise to £12.02.
Pay is higher in London, where workers inside the M25 will see hourly rates increase by 36p, from £14.35 to £14.71. With length of service, store assistants can earn up to £14.30 an hour nationally, or £15.03 in and around the capital.
One standout perk remains Aldi’s paid breaks. It is the only UK supermarket to offer paid breaks to all in-store staff, a benefit the company says can be worth up to £1,470 a year.
The grocer currently employs more than 45,000 people across around 1,060 UK stores and is continuing to expand, with 80 new openings planned over the next two years, creating fresh job opportunities across the country.
