A British supermarket giant has announced a fresh pay rise for its store staff, taking hourly wages to £13.10 by July in a move set to benefit around 110,000 workers across the UK.

The increase for staff at Asda - headquartered in Leeds - will be rolled out in two stages, with hourly pay rising to £12.71 from April, before reaching £13.10 in July.

For employees working within the M25, rates will climb to £13.93 in April and £14.35 by midsummer.

The pay boost represents a 4% increase and forms part of a wider £80 million investment in frontline wages.

Since being acquired by TDR Capital and the Issa brothers in 2021, Asda has invested a total of £575 million into retail pay, with hourly wages rising by around 40% over that period.

Previously, Asda’s minimum hourly rate stood at £12.60 nationally and £13.82 inside the M25, following its last increase in October 2025.

The latest uplift signals continued pressure among major supermarkets to attract and retain staff as competition intensifies across the grocery sector.

According to chief people officer James Goodman, store colleagues remain central to the company’s long-term plans. He said the investment reflects the important role staff play in delivering customer service and supporting Asda’s ongoing turnaround strategy.

The move comes shortly after rival Tesco confirmed it would also raise pay for store workers, underlining a broader trend of supermarkets boosting wages to remain competitive in a tight labour market.
