Brewdog news: major beer chain closing all UK bars, including in Yorkshire, amid possible sale talks

Yorkshire beer fans will have to wait, with bars closed for staff meetings and major company changes 🍺

  • All UK BrewDog bars are closed today (March 2), including Hull, as the chain finalises a potential sale
  • The closure affects staff and customers, with meetings, deliveries, and bookings cancelled for the day
  • The firm’s financial struggles continue, following a £37m loss, job cuts, and halted distillery production
  • Yorkshire has one remaining bar in Hull; previous closures included York and Sheffield
  • Future of the chain uncertain, with brand restructuring and a smaller, less stable pub footprint

Beer lovers across Britain will see the doors closed on one of the country’s most high‑profile craft beer chains today (March 2), including in Yorkshire.

Scottish craft beer brand BrewDog, known for its bold marketing, rebellious branding and hoppy ales like Punk IPA, has temporarily shut all of its UK bars for the day.

The move comes as the company works to finalise the possible sale of the entire business amid ongoing financial pressures.

Why every BrewDog is closed today

In an internal email to staff, BrewDog’s new chief executive, James Taylor, said licensed pubs and bars across the UK would remain closed on Monday, March 2.

This is to allow colleagues to attend company‑wide meetings and to “comply with licensing issues arising from an anticipated change of ownership.” Deliveries and customer bookings have also been cancelled for the day.

BrewDog has been struggling to turn a consistent profit in recent years. It posted a £37 million loss last year, has cut jobs, and earlier this winter halted distillery production at its headquarters in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, as the company “sharpens its focus.”

For Yorkshire drinkers, BrewDog still has at least one bar: BrewDog Hull, located in Princes Quay shopping centre and popular with visitors for its range of craft beers.

In 2025, BrewDog confirmed the closure of 10 bars across the UK, including in York, Sheffield and Leeds, as part of a major restructuring of its bar division.

The closures were blamed on “challenging market conditions” and the difficulty of making those sites commercially viable.

BrewDog currently operates around 60 bars across the UK, from Aberdeen to Cardiff, Belfast to Bournemouth.

Today’s closure is an inconvenience, and a sign of deeper turbulence within the company. BrewDog’s financial struggles, recent layoffs, brand repositioning and shrinking bar footprint suggest its pub estate is smaller and less stable than it once was.

For now, Yorkshire beer lovers can look forward to returning to BrewDog venues once doors reopen tomorrow (March 3), but the future shape of the chain’s presence may continue to evolve in the months ahead.
