Benefit payment dates 2026: DWP UK payment dates in January, including Child Benefit, Universal Credit changes

January is one of the toughest months for budgets, so knowing when your money lands can make it a little easier 💷

  • Most benefits and state pensions are being paid as normal throughout January 2026
  • Payments due on New Year’s Day were paid early on Wednesday, December 31
  • Universal Credit, PIP, Child Benefit and the state pension are all included
  • State pension payment days depend on the last two digits of your NI number
  • January 2026 is a key point in the move from legacy benefits to Universal Credit

January can be a tight month financially, especially after Christmas spending and winter energy bills.

For millions of households relying on benefits or the state pension, knowing exactly when money is due to arrive can make budgeting a lot easier.

The good news is that, for January 2026, most payments will go out as normal, with just one key date to keep in mind.

The main disruption came from New Year’s Day (Thursday, January 1), which was a bank holiday.

If your benefit or state pension was due on this date, it should have been paid early, on Wednesday, December 31 (New Year’s Eve) instead. If your payment wasn’t due on 1 January, it should still arrive on its usual day.

Benefits paid in January 2026

Most Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits will continue on their normal schedule throughout January. This includes:

  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Child Benefit
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Pension Credit
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • State Pension
  • Universal Credit

Payments are typically made straight into your bank, building society, or credit union account.

If you’re unsure about your exact payment date, you can check your award letter or online account, or visit the government’s website for up-to-date guidance.

Universal Credit update

January 2026 is also an important milestone for Universal Credit, and the DWP is aiming to complete the move of people still on “legacy benefits”, such as tax credits, income support, jobseeker’s allowance, and housing benefit, onto Universal Credit by this point.

Most affected claimants should already have received a migration notice explaining what to do next.

State pension payment dates

The basic state pension is usually paid every four weeks, with the day determined by the last two digits of your National Insurance number:

  • 00–19: Monday
  • 20–39: Tuesday
  • 40–59: Wednesday
  • 60–79: Thursday
  • 80–99: Friday

As with benefits, if your pension payment fell on New Year’s Day, it should have been paid early on December 31.
