Families in Yorkshire could save hundreds as new government loans and free home upgrades roll out ⚡

  • Homeowners can now access low- and zero-interest loans for solar panels, heat pumps, and batteries
  • £5 billion has been set aside for insulation and technology improvements for low-income households
  • The £15bn Warm Homes Plan aims to upgrade five million homes, cut bills, and lift up to one million households out of fuel poverty by 2030
  • New rules and grants will help make energy improvements across all housing types
  • At least 70% of heat pumps installed are expected to be built domestically, supporting jobs and green technology adoption

For Yorkshire families struggling with rising energy bills, the Government is rolling out a major new scheme to make clean, efficient energy more affordable.

Homeowners will soon be able to access low- and zero-interest loans to install solar panels, heat pumps, and home batteries, giving households a chance to cut bills and take control of their energy use.

The initiative is part of a wider £15 billion “Warm Homes Plan,” aimed at upgrading up to five million homes across the UK. The goal: reduce energy costs, cut carbon emissions, and lift up to a million households out of fuel poverty by 2030.

Free upgrades for families who need them most

Low-income households and those struggling to pay their bills won’t have to wait to benefit. Around £5 billion has been set aside to provide free energy upgrades for insulation, clean energy technology, and other efficiency measures.

Depending on the home, these free packages could include solar panels, a battery to store electricity, or even a heat pump, a modern, eco-friendly alternative to traditional boilers. In some cases, entire streets of social housing could see upgrades.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband described the scheme as “a national project to turn the tide” on fuel poverty, adding that it’s unacceptable for millions to live without warm, safe homes.

Low- and zero-interest loans for homeowners

For those who don’t qualify for free upgrades, the government is offering consumer loans at very low or even zero interest. These loans can be used to install:

  • Solar panels, which generate electricity from sunlight, reducing reliance on the grid.
  • Batteries, to store excess solar energy for use when the sun isn’t shining.
  • Heat pumps, which use electricity to efficiently heat your home and hot water, often more cheaply than conventional gas boilers.

These loans are designed to make green home improvements accessible, with the added bonus that they can help households save hundreds of pounds a year on energy bills.

Homeowners installing a heat pump may also qualify for an additional £7,500 government grant, making the transition even more affordable.

To help roll out upgrades, a new Warm Homes Agency will coordinate nationwide efforts, while local mayors will be in the “driving seat” for programmes in their areas.

The plan also includes measures to protect renters and support landlords in making energy efficiency improvements, ensuring benefits reach the whole housing market.

Another target is boosting the UK clean energy industry. At least 70% of heat pumps installed under the programme are expected to be built domestically, supporting jobs while helping households save energy.

What it means for families

If you’re thinking about installing solar panels or switching to a heat pump, now may be the right time. The government-backed loans make upfront costs manageable, while free upgrades could provide immediate relief for families struggling with energy bills.

Over time, these improvements can significantly reduce household costs, provide more control over your energy use, and increase the comfort of your home.

Campaigners say the Warm Homes Plan could be a game-changer for the UK’s coldest, dampest homes.

Simon Francis of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition called it “a rescue mission for the coldest, dampest homes” and urged the government to pair public funding with quality advice and strong consumer protections.

WWF’s Rick Parfett added that using the UK’s abundant clean energy could protect households from soaring fossil fuel prices and help tackle the climate crisis.

The plan builds on previous measures, such as discounts on energy bills and grants to ease the cost of living.

The Prime Minister has described a warm home as a “basic guarantee for every family in Britain,” and the £15 billion programme represents a serious step toward making that a reality.
