As winter energy bills bite, households in one area of Yorkshire are set to receive a welcome financial boost.

The City of Doncaster Council has confirmed it will issue one-off £100 payments to eligible residents to help cover energy costs, as part of the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) Household Support Fund.

The initiative, funded by a £742 million national pot, aims to help vulnerable households across England with essential living costs such as energy bills, food, and other necessities over the winter months.

Each local council has the flexibility to decide how the money is distributed, which means the support available, and the process for claiming it, can vary depending on where you live.

Who is eligible for support in Doncaster?

In Doncaster, the council has made clear who will benefit. Households currently receiving any of the following will automatically qualify for the £100 payment:

  • Housing Benefit
  • Local Council Tax Reduction
  • Universal Credit that includes the housing element
  • Means-tested free school meals

Eligible households will receive the payment on or around Monday, December 15, 2025, either directly into their bank account or via cheque, depending on how they were paid previously.

Do I need to apply?

Those who have received Household Support Fund payments before do not need to apply again, as the money will be sent automatically.

For residents who want the payment sent directly into their bank account rather than by cheque, the council has asked them to email [email protected] with their name, National Insurance number, full address, and bank details.

New applicants or households whose eligibility could not be verified must submit an application to receive the support.

“A single payment will be made for energy bills to eligible households of £100 for households with or without children,” the council confirmed.

“If you received a payment under the previous Household Support Fund and we have not been able to verify that you still meet the qualifying criteria, you will need to reapply.”

Can I get the Household Support Fund where I live?

Payments from the Household Support Fund are available across the UK, but the timing and method of support can differ between areas and regions, as each council administers its share of the funding independently.

In some areas, local charities or community groups may distribute the money, while others may have restrictions on the number of payments a household can claim each year.

This means some residents could receive assistance in time for Christmas, while others may have to wait longer.

The DWP says that the Household Support Fund is intended to ease winter financial pressures for families struggling with essential costs, offering a lifeline to those who need it most.

But the exact form and timing of support is determined locally, so it pays to check your council’s announcements if you live outside Doncaster.

For Doncaster residents, the £100 payment is a straightforward way to reduce some of the winter strain on household budgets.

With energy prices remaining high, this one-off cash injection could make a real difference in keeping homes warm and essentials covered during the colder months.

Eligible residents who have not received a payment before, or who need to update their payment details, are urged to contact the council promptly to ensure they receive the support. For more information, visit the City of Doncaster Council’s website.
