Jewellery: January sees surge in jewellery, gold and designer items theft – how to keep your valuables safe
After the holiday rush, your new jewellery and luxury items could be at risk 🔒
- Jewellery, watches, and designer handbags see theft spikes in January
- Insurance firm Allianz UK reports 10% of luxury item claims occur in the first month of the year
- Dark winter nights and post-Christmas new gifts make homes more vulnerable
- Secure storage, valuations, and updated insurance help protect valuables
- If items are stolen, report to police and insurer promptly to speed claims
The New Year can be a time of fresh starts, but for some, January comes with an unwelcome surprise: a higher risk of gold and jewellery thefts.
Recent analysis from Allianz UK, one of the country’s leading insurers, reveals that claims for stolen luxury items, including watches, jewellery, and designer handbags, tend to spike in the first month of the year.
Over the past five years, around 10% of all such claims were made in January, with the average claim totalling £8,000 and some losses reaching as high as £82,000.
So why January? According to Allianz, darker winter nights make homes more vulnerable to burglaries, and the post-Christmas period often leaves many households with new, valuable items on display.
Rising gold prices in recent months may also make jewellery an increasingly tempting target for thieves.

Protecting your valuables
While the statistics can sound alarming, there are practical steps homeowners can take to reduce the risk of theft and ensure their possessions are properly covered.
Secure storage: Jewellery should never be left lying around. Invest in a secure safe, preferably one bolted to the floor, and store high-value items there. For particularly valuable pieces, consider a bank deposit box.
Document your collection: Keep professional valuations for all significant items, alongside receipts and clear photographs. This documentation will be invaluable if you need to make an insurance claim.
Review your insurance: Many homeowners underestimate the value of their possessions, leading to underinsurance. Check that your policy covers your jewellery and luxury items adequately. If you’ve recently received gifts or purchased new items, update your insurer to ensure continuous coverage.
Limit public exposure: Avoid leaving expensive items where they can be seen from windows or shared on social media. Thieves sometimes scout potential targets online.
Home security measures: Simple additions such as timed lighting, alarms, and motion sensors can make a home a less attractive target. Even basic precautions, like locking doors and windows, can significantly reduce risk.
If the worst happens
Even with precautions, theft can occur. If your valuables are stolen:
- Report it immediately to the police and obtain a crime reference number.
- Contact your insurer as soon as possible, providing your valuations, receipts, and photographs. This will speed up your claim process.
- Avoid replacing items impulsively before your claim is processed, as this may complicate reimbursement.
Graham Wright, managing director of home insurance at Allianz UK, says: “Gold and jewellery items are tempting targets for thieves, especially on dark winter nights when burglaries are more common.
“They often represent significant financial and sentimental value, and it’s important that homeowners take action to ensure their valuables remain safe.
With careful planning, the post-holiday rush doesn’t have to leave you vulnerable. Secure storage, updated insurance, and clear documentation can give peace of mind and protect both your financial and emotional investment in your treasured possessions.
