Staff at Village Hotels in Leeds secure £5k each in back pay

Workers at a Leeds hotel are celebrating after receiving thousands of pounds in back pay.

Housekeeping staff who are members of Unite lodged a collective grievance with Leeds South and Leeds North Village Hotels and were due to take strike action from 26-28 December last year.

The company has offered between several thousand per employee at Leeds South Hotel.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This shows the power of a union. Staff came together and lodged a valid grievance with their employer.

“Supported by their union and with the threat of strike action they have justly won money they were rightfully owed.”

Staff secured up to £5,000 each in back pay, holiday pay and for unpaid breaks.

Unite hospitality lead Bryan Simpson added: “Our members are to be congratulated for their hard fought victory.

“But Village Hotels must understand it is on a formal warning from Unite.

“The mandate for strike action remains live and our members have every intention of using it unless the company negotiates over equal pay and the real living wage.”
