Staff shortages and local issues mean some Yorkshire homes may get their post later than usual 📬

  • Some households in West Yorkshire may experience Royal Mail delivery delays this weekend
  • Disruption is affecting addresses served by delivery offices in Batley and Pontefract
  • Postcodes including WF5, WF7, WF8, WF9, WF11, WF15, WF16 and WF17 could see slower deliveries
  • Royal Mail says staff shortages and local issues are behind the temporary disruption
  • The company plans to rotate delivery rounds to reduce the impact on individual homes

Households across parts of West Yorkshire could face slower post this weekend after delivery disruptions were reported at two local delivery offices, affecting several postcodes.

According to Royal Mail, temporary staffing issues and other factors mean some deliveries may not go ahead as normal, with postal workers instead rotating routes to spread delays more evenly among residents.

The disruption is expected to affect addresses served by the delivery offices in Batley and Pontefract.

Yorkshire postcodes affected

Customers in the following West Yorkshire postcodes could see delays:

Batley Delivery Office

  • WF5
  • WF15
  • WF16
  • WF17

Pontefract Delivery Office

  • WF7
  • WF8
  • WF9
  • WF11

Royal Mail says that while its national road and air network is running normally, some local offices are struggling to maintain their usual six-day delivery schedule.

In a statement, the company said: “We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for six days a week. In a small number of local offices this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors.”

To limit disruption, the company said deliveries may be rotated so that no single household experiences repeated missed rounds.

Royal Mail added that additional support is being sent to affected offices in an effort to return services to normal as quickly as possible.

“In those cases, we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers. We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive.”

Long running problems

The latest delays come amid continued scrutiny of Royal Mail’s performance in recent years.

The postal operator has faced criticism over missed delivery targets, industrial action and staff shortages that have led to backlogs across parts of the country, particularly during busy periods such as Christmas.

Regulator Ofcom has previously fined the company for failing to meet legal delivery targets for first- and second-class post. Royal Mail last met its annual first-class delivery target in the 2019–20 financial year.
