  • The FutureMaker programme aims to build skills in AI, data, analytics and business decision-making
  • It comes as graduate job vacancies fall to their lowest level in seven years
  • Applications for the scheme opened on January 9

At a time when graduate job opportunities are becoming increasingly hard to come by, one of the UK’s biggest supermarkets is opening the door to a new generation of talent, with artificial intelligence (AI) firmly at the heart of its plans.

This week, Sainsbury’s announced the launch of its new FutureMaker graduate programme, a two-year scheme designed to equip early-career workers with the digital, data and AI skills the retailer believes will shape the future of retail.

Nearly 50 graduates will be recruited into roles at the company’s store support centre, giving successful applicants hands-on experience inside one of Britain’s most recognisable brands.

The move comes as UK graduates face what job search site Indeed has described as the toughest graduate jobs market in years, with advertised graduate roles down by a third compared with last year and at their lowest level in seven years.

Against that backdrop, Sainsbury’s focus on employability, future-facing skills and long-term progression may appeal to those worried about career security.

Rather than treating AI as a niche technical specialism, the supermarket says the programme is designed to “demystify” AI and machine learning, helping graduates use these tools responsibly and confidently across a range of business areas.

Alongside AI, participants will build skills in data and analytics, change and transformation, and business decision-making, all increasingly valuable across the wider jobs market.

Graduates on the scheme will rotate through different teams and, on completion, will be able to apply for permanent roles within the business.

Available career paths span buying and merchandising, digital retail, commercial operations, data science and analytics, logistics and fulfilment, supply chain, food technology, transformation, property and procurement, and product and innovation.

Sainsbury’s says the programme was shaped by research into the future needs of the business, as it continues to invest in automation and digital tools as part of a wider cost-cutting and simplification drive.

While the retailer has announced significant job cuts over the past two years, it has also stressed the importance of building a sustainable pipeline of future leaders with the right skills for an AI-driven economy.

A spokesperson said the company was “committed to investing in early careers” and ensuring graduates are equipped for long-term success, both within Sainsbury’s and beyond.

How to apply

Applications for the Sainsbury’s FutureMaker graduate programme opened on January 9.

Candidates can apply directly through Sainsbury’s official careers website, where full eligibility criteria, role details and the application process are set out.

Early applications are advised, as graduate schemes are often competitive and places are limited.
