UK household winter payments DWP: this 2026 fuel payment deadline decides whether you get allowance or nothing
Missing this week’s deadline could cost you hundreds of pounds 💷
- January 28 is the cut-off for those expecting a Winter Fuel Payment but haven’t received it
- Eligible individuals can receive £200–£300, depending on age and household setup
- Most payments are automatic, but some people must actively claim (deadline March 31)
- Contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre with your NI number and bank details if unpaid
A little-known January deadline could make the difference between receiving up to £300 in winter support or missing out altogether.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that Wednesday, January 28, is the cut-off for people who were expecting a Winter Fuel Payment this winter but haven’t yet seen the money land in their bank account.
While most eligible households were paid automatically in November or December 2025, the Government says some payments can be delayed, diverted or missed entirely due to changes in circumstances.
Anyone who believes they qualify but hasn’t been paid must act quickly to avoid losing out.

What is the January 28 deadline?
The January 28 deadline applies only to people who were expecting a Winter Fuel Payment this winter but did not receive it automatically.
If that’s you, the DWP says you should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre as soon as possible to check what’s happened. Missing this deadline could mean the payment is not issued at all.
This deadline is not the same as the claim deadline, which applies to people who need to actively apply for the payment rather than receive it automatically.
Who qualifies for the Winter Fuel Payment?
In most cases, you qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment if:
- You were born before 22 September 1959
- You live in England or Wales
- You met the eligibility rules during the qualifying week, which ran from 15 to 21 September 2025
Eligibility is assessed based on your circumstances during that qualifying week, including whether you lived alone or with a partner, and whether either of you received certain benefits.
The amount paid depends on your age and household setup. If you live alone, or no one else in your household qualifies, you could receive:
- £200 if you were born between 22 September 1945 and 21 September 1959
- £300 if you were born before 22 September 1945
If you live with a partner and make a joint claim for certain benefits like Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Income Support or income-related ESA, the payment is usually:
- £200 if both of you were born between 22 September 1945 and 21 September 1959
- £300 if one or both of you were born before 22 September 1945
The DWP stresses that Winter Fuel Payments do not affect other benefits.
Who needs to make a claim?
Most people do not need to apply, as the payment is made automatically. But you may need to claim if you have never received a Winter Fuel Payment before, or you deferred your State Pension since your last payment.
In these cases, the claim deadline is later: Tuesday, March 31. If you’re missing a payment, or need to make a claim, you can contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre by:
