'I can’t believe it': How my love of dogs helped me through anorexia before I was named Dog Walker of the Year

‘It still doesn’t feel real’: How my love of animals helped me rebuild my life

A woman who found comfort and purpose through her love of animals while battling anorexia is celebrating after being named Dog Walker of the Year.

Annabel Maertens, who launched Paws on the Move in 2024, was left “overwhelmed, emotional and incredibly grateful” after receiving the award at the 2026 West Yorkshire Business Awards.

She said: ““It still doesn't quite feel real.

"This award isn't just about me—it's about every person who trusted me with their beloved pets and encouraged me to keep going.”

Growing up, Annabel battled with anorexia but shared that her love of animal, and their support, became an important part of her recovery.

She added: "The business means so much to me personally.

"After battling anorexia from the age of 14, working with animals became an important part of my recovery by giving me purpose, routine and confidence”.

After working as a domiciliary carer following the pandemic, Annabel was inspired to turn her lifelong passion and love for animals into a career.

In 2024, she began offering dog walking services to local pet owners.

Since then, her business has grown, with Paws on the Move offering pet sitting and home visits across Wakefield.

In May, Annabel discovered she was nominated for a West Yorkshire Business Award and last month, Annabel finally found out she’d won.

"I honestly couldn't believe it. I felt overwhelmed, emotional and incredibly grateful.” She said.

"It was such a proud moment because it reflected all the hard work that's gone into building the business over the last two years.

"If sharing my story helps even one person who is struggling with an eating disorder to believe that recovery is possible, then that's something I'll be incredibly proud of too.”
