Millions of UK households are set to benefit from a major change to the Warm Home Discount, giving families more certainty over their energy bills amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

The Government has confirmed that eligible households will receive the £150 Winter Energy Rebate every year until 2030, providing a vital financial boost at a time when energy costs remain historically high.

Energy prices have been a major source of concern for households across England, Wales, and Scotland, and this winter, the average bill for someone on a standard variable tariff hit £1,758.

The increase, while capped by regulator Ofgem, has been partly driven by funding nuclear power projects and discounts offered to households during the colder months.

What’s changing?

The Warm Home Discount, originally designed to help low-income households, has already been expanded in recent years.

Last year, the scheme grew by 2.7 million households, bringing the total number of eligible families to around six million. Now, the Government has confirmed that this support will continue annually until at least 2030/31.

For most households in England and Wales, the discount will be applied automatically if they receive a qualifying means-tested benefit and their energy supplier has more than 1,000 customers.

Those who believe they are eligible but have not received a letter or payment can call 0800 030 9322 by Friday, February 27 to check their status.

In addition, from April, the Government plans to reduce the average household bill by £150 through the scrapping of the Energy Company Obligation (Eco) scheme.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said the move was part of a broader effort to tackle the affordability crisis and provide families with peace of mind.

What it means for you

Experts say the extended Warm Home Discount will offer ongoing support to millions of low-income households.

Ned Hammond from Energy UK highlighted the importance of targeting assistance effectively, while Matt Copeland of National Energy Action said that energy advice and support should continue for those outside the benefits system to prevent vulnerable families from falling through the cracks.

For households facing tight budgets, this guaranteed annual rebate could be the difference between cutting back on essentials and staying warm through winter

With energy prices showing no signs of easing, the Warm Home Discount offers a crucial lifeline for millions of families, helping them plan ahead with greater financial certainty.
