Shoppers in Yorkshire could soon feel the impact of fresh high-street turmoil after one of Britain’s best-known homeware names entered administration — putting more than 500 jobs at risk.

217-year-old pottery firm Denby, famed for its stoneware and heritage designs, has appoint FRP Advisory to oversee the process, which has put more than 500 jobs at risk.

Though stores remain open for now and online orders are still being fulfilled, uncertainty looms over its future, including its popular outlets in Castleford, Rotherham and York.

Denby has been under mounting pressure for several years, battling soaring energy bills, rising employment costs and a slowdown in consumer demand for its products.

Like many traditional manufacturers, it has also struggled with tighter lending conditions, making it harder to secure the funding needed to stabilise operations.

The company first filed a notice of intent to appoint administrators earlier in March, buying time to explore rescue options. A short extension followed, but efforts to find a buyer or investment partner fell short.

Despite the setback, there is still some hope, and reports suggest several parties are interested in Denby’s assets, raising the possibility that parts of the business, or even the brand itself, could be saved in some form.

Founded in 1809, Denby has survived previous crises, including a 2009 administration and earlier interventions to protect parts of its operations, and its pottery is still produced from Derbyshire clay at its original site.

For now, attention will turn to how the administration unfolds, and whether a buyer can be found quickly enough to safeguard jobs and keep the brand’s Yorkshire presence alive.
