A Leeds-based veterinary business, Beehive Vets, is celebrating its anniversary this month, flying the flag for independent practices and boosting jobs and skills in the region.

Based in Rothwell, Beehive Vets is run by husband and wife veterinary surgeons, Esther and Luke Green. On Valentine’s Day, it celebrated its 4th anniversary, marking four years of business growth and paving the way to further strengthen its offer.

The local business’s success comes at a time when the vet industry is firmly in the spotlight. Recently, DEFRA (the government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), announced its proposed reforms to the veterinary sector, aimed at improving consumer confidence, animal welfare and professional standards, in addition to making pricing clearer for pet owners.

This follows the launch of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) investigation into veterinary services, again looking at transparency and service offering for pet owners across the UK.

Luke Green said: “We are so proud to be celebrating our fourth birthday. At a time when the vet industry is in the spotlight, we think, as an independent practice, it is even more important to celebrate how far we have come.

“As a family-run independent business, we have no outside influence; all the decisions we make are for the benefit of our clients and team. There are no forced financial targets to hit and we invest in the practice where we need to. We believe this way of working is fundamental to the success of our business and ensures our team is happy and our clients are getting the best care possible.”

Demand for pet care is high, with the Beehive Vets team carrying out more than 19,000 vet consults, almost 2000 cat vaccinations and nearly 4,500 dog vaccinations over the past four years. With advanced skills in-house, many cases have been dealt with by the talented team and unique cases such as the removal of washing pegs from the stomach of a bulldog and a large ball of hair bobbles from the stomach of a cat.

Esther Green said: “We see some unique cases coming through the doors! But this gives us a great insight into the behaviours of our pets, and we can always learn about how we can use these cases to provide more education and support to our clients.”

A large refurbishment was completed in 2025, which increased the practice’s consultation room capacity and created a dedicated cat waiting area. Growing from a team of 5 to now employing 13 local professionals, there are plans in the pipeline to further boost business.

Esther said: “We won’t rest on our laurels for long and we have several options we are considering to ensure we provide the very best service to our customers and their pets.”

Rapid growth across the past four years has seen the Leeds business extend clinical capabilities and invest in new equipment and training.

Esther added: “We are one of the only practices in the Leeds area to offer in-house cardiology services, such as heart investigations, led by Luke, a qualified cardiology postgraduate certificate holder, and one of only a few practices to offer keyhole procedures, including dog spays. All our vets and nurses are fully qualified, and RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) registered with three vets and two nurses holding post graduate certificates; the highest level of qualification available in general practice.”

With community at the heart of its ethos, the practice is using the anniversary to thank its clients by running a hamper competition and giving away a luxurious ‘Lovestruck’ Fortnum & Mason hamper, filled with fudge, biscuits, chocolate and more.
