Workers at a major employee-owned retailer are set for a significant pay boost from April.
John Lewis Partnership has announced a £108 million investment in staff wages, and will increase shop floor pay by 6.9% from April 1.
The move takes the minimum hourly rate to £13.25 across the UK, rising to £14.80 for staff working within the M25. For a typical full-time employee, the uplift is worth around £1,600 a year.
The increase outpaces the new National Living Wage, which rises from £12.21 to £12.71 per hour for workers aged 21 and over from April.
Employees in specialist or skilled roles will see even higher rates. Their minimum pay will rise to £14.31 per hour nationally and £15.98 inside the M25.

Helen Webb, chief people officer at the Partnership, said the investment reflects a continued focus on rewarding staff, known internally as “partners” due to the company’s employee-owned structure.
She described the move as putting more money “into their pockets month-in, month-out”.
The pay announcement lands just weeks before the retailer publishes its annual results, but staff bonuses remain uncertain.
The Partnership did not pay an annual bonus last year, marking the third consecutive pause despite improved profits. Executives have previously signalled that a bonus could return if profits exceed £200 million.
