'We just can’t carry on anymore': Leeds city centre cocktail bar Psilo to close over 'skyrocketing' costs

Leeds city centre has lost another popular independent business as cocktail bar Psilo announces it will be closing its doors due to the "incredibly tough" economic climate.

The New Briggate venue, which labels itself as “an ongoing study of libation and guilty pleasures for your perfect trip”, will have its final day of trading next Friday, November 28, after three and a half years.

Psilo owner Lydia and the team stated that "skyrocketing" costs meant it was no longer "financially feasible to even continue into the new year."

She said: “Where to even begin. I hoped I’d never have to write this post. We have had an absolute blast the last three-and-a-half years, and I cannot tell you how proud I am and how much I have loved creating such an eclectic and inclusive little bar, serving great tunes and imaginative tipples every day of the week, all while providing a safe space for everyone.

“But unfortunately, in this current economic climate, we just can’t carry on anymore. We all know times are incredibly tough for independent businesses, bars have been shutting left, right and centre for the last two years.

“I was hoping we could survive til the coming Christmas period, but costs in all areas are continuing to skyrocket, and we can just see no way it’s financially feasible to even continue into the new year.”

A big final party will be held on Friday, November 28, with special discounts and “likely a 6am finish” to send off the bar.

Owner Lydia added: “Genuinely, we only survived this long in such a rough time for Leeds [hospitality] purely because of you guys and your support.

“I’m eternally grateful for the last three and a half years and all the memories people made in Psilo. Big shout-out to my father as well; none of this would’ve been possible in the first place without your support and guidance.”
