A major supermarket is set to hike pay for the seventh time since 2023, as it announces another investment in staff wages and family-friendly benefits.

German-owned discount chain Lidl says the move will once again make it the highest-paying UK supermarket.

It has confirmed it will raise entry-level hourly pay to £13.45 nationwide from March 1, rising to £14.45 with length of service. In London, new starter pay will increase from £14.35 to £14.80 an hour, climbing to £15.30 for longer-serving staff.

The latest uplift represents a £29 million investment and comes ahead of the national minimum wage increase in April, when the rate for eligible workers aged 21 and over will rise from £12.21 to £12.71 an hour.

Alongside the pay boost, Lidl has also announced a major upgrade to its paternity leave offering. Paid paternity leave will double from two to four weeks on full pay, with the entitlement rising to eight weeks of fully paid leave after five years’ service.

The retailer says the change is designed to better support working families and help close gender gaps in the workplace.

Lidl employs more than 35,000 people across Great Britain and continues to expand rapidly.

The supermarket recently confirmed plans to open 19 new stores in the coming weeks, creating up to 640 jobs.

After reaching the milestone of 1,000 UK stores last year, Lidl is targeting around 40 additional openings by the end of February.

The expansion comes amid strong trading performance. Lidl enjoyed a particularly robust Christmas period, reporting a 10% rise in sales and more than £1.1 billion in turnover in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve.

Industry analysts now rank it as Britain’s sixth-largest grocery chain, after making some of the biggest market share gains in recent months.
