Lloyds Banking Group is making a big bet on artificial intelligence, and it could shape how customers bank, and who the company hires, for years to come.

The group, which owns Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, has confirmed that all 67,000 employees will be put through AI training as part of a multi-million-pound digital overhaul.

Every member of staff, regardless of role or seniority, is expected to complete the training by the end of the year.

The move is designed to make the bank faster, more efficient and more digitally savvy at a time when many customers are managing more of their money online.

Lloyds hopes AI tools will help staff save time on routine tasks, improve customer service and support the development of new products and services.

Training will start with a compulsory module on “working with AI responsibly”, focusing on safe and ethical use of the technology. This reflects growing concern across the finance industry about data protection, bias and misuse of AI systems.

The push is being driven from the very top of the organisation, and chief executive Charlie Nunn and his executive committee have already been enrolled on bespoke AI training.

Lloyds says it wants 100% of its workforce to be “AI literate” by the end of 2026, having already invested several million pounds into digital and automation projects.

But the announcement comes alongside wider changes at the bank. Lloyds has been reducing its high-street footprint, with 136 branch closures announced at the start of 2025, due to complete by the end of March.

It has also introduced tougher performance policies, placing around 3,000 staff on structured support plans if they are deemed to be underperforming.

For customers, the shift underlines a future where banking is increasingly digital-first, with fewer branches but more technology-driven services.

How to apply for jobs and careers at Lloyds

Lloyds Banking Group regularly recruits across technology, data, customer service, finance, risk and corporate roles.

Vacancies are advertised on the Lloyds Banking Group careers website, where applicants can search by role, location or brand.

The bank offers graduate schemes, apprenticeships and experienced-hire roles, with many positions now advertising flexible or hybrid working.

As AI becomes more central to the business, digital skills, or a willingness to learn them, are likely to be increasingly valuable for anyone applying.
