Yorkshire shoppers will soon see a new kind of activity take over one city retail park.

Popular clothing and homeware retailer Matalan has closed its Heeley Retail Park store in Sheffield, and it’s making way for a padel sports club.

The store shut its doors for the final time on Saturday, March 7, marking the latest in a series of closures by the high street chain.

Matalan, founded in 1985 and now operating over 200 UK stores alongside a busy online platform, has long been known for affordable fashion for women, men, and children.

A spokesperson for Matalan said the company is focusing on supporting staff affected by the closure, with efforts underway to explore alternative positions.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed serving customers at Heeley Retail Park and hope they will continue to shop with us at our nearby Sheffield Parkway store,” they added.

Following the closure, its has been confirmed that the Heeley site will be transformed into a padel club, set to open this summer.

Padel, a fast-growing racquet sport that mixes elements of tennis and squash, is typically played in doubles on a smaller enclosed court, with glass and mesh walls integral to play. Its rising popularity has made it a natural fit for new sports venues across the UK.

The Sheffield closure comes alongside other recent store shutdowns, but despite these closures, Matalan is investing heavily in its remaining stores.

Last year, the retailer refurbished 30 sites as part of a £25 million investment, with these updated locations outperforming older stores in sales. The company plans to refurbish an additional 40 stores in the coming months.

For shoppers and sports enthusiasts alike, the change marks a shift in how high street spaces are used. While Sheffield locals may miss browsing Matalan’s aisles, they will soon have a new option for active leisure right in the heart of Heeley.

As the summer approaches, those curious about padel will have the chance to try a sport that’s increasingly capturing attention nationwide.
