Beloved spots are disappearing from high streets as rising costs reshape how the UK goes out 🍸

  • The owner of Revolution and Revolucion de Cuba has closed 21 UK venues with immediate effect
  • The Revel Collective entered administration, resulting in 591 job losses
  • Rising costs and weaker spending by younger customers were blamed for the closures
  • Several bars in Yorkshire and other major cities are among those shutting permanently
  • Parts of the business have been sold, saving 41 venues and more than 1,500 jobs

Night out plans are about to change in dozens of UK towns and cities - including in Yorkshire - after the company behind Revolution and Revolucion de Cuba confirmed it is closing 21 venues with immediate effect.

The Revel Collective, one of the UK’s best-known bar operators, has entered administration, triggering the closure of 14 Revolution bars, six Revolucion de Cuba venues and one Peach Pub.

The move has resulted in 591 job losses, with administrators saying that rising costs and weaker spending by younger customers made parts of the business unsustainable.

But the shake-up is not the end of the road for the group’s brands. Administrators at FTI Consulting have confirmed that large parts of the business have been sold, securing the future of 41 other venues and protecting 1,582 jobs.

The Revolution and Revolucion de Cuba brands have been bought by Neos Hospitality Group, which already operates nightlife brands including Barbara’s Bier Haus and Bonnie Rogues.

Meanwhile, the remaining Peach Pubs business has been acquired by a newly formed company, Coral Pub Company.

For customers, the impact will be felt immediately in locations where venues have shut their doors for good.

The company said it has been hit by a combination of higher operating costs, including energy and wages, alongside more cautious consumer spending. Younger customers, in particular, are going out less often as budgets tighten.

While dozens of venues will continue trading under new ownership, the closures highlight the ongoing challenges facing bars, pubs and clubs across the UK, and signal that even well-known nightlife brands are not immune to the pressures reshaping how, when and where people go out.
