The supermarket is betting on better rewards to keep staff onboard as household budgets stay stretched 🛒

  • Sainsbury’s has confirmed an above-inflation 5% pay rise for its hourly-paid staff across the UK
  • The supermarket says the increase rewards colleagues’ contribution and builds on years of pay investment
  • Staff also receive benefits including discounts worth over £600 a year, free food on shifts and pensions
  • Union Usdaw welcomed the deal, saying retail workers are key to communities and the business
  • Sainsbury’s continues to recruit nationwide, with roles available in stores, warehouses and offices

Staff at one of the UK’s biggest supermarkets are set to receive an above-inflation pay rise this year, move that could matter not just to workers, but to shoppers feeling the ongoing cost-of-living squeeze.

Sainsbury’s has confirmed a 5% pay increase for its hourly-paid colleagues, describing the uplift as recognition of staff’s “exceptional contribution” and part of its wider ambition to remain a competitive employer in a tight labour market.

The retailer said the increase builds on “several years of significant investment in colleague pay”, as supermarkets compete to retain experienced staff amid rising operating costs and continued demand for frontline workers.

For employees, it means pay growing faster than prices after years of real-terms wage erosion across much of the economy.

Sainsbury’s has also highlighted the wider benefits attached to working for the company. These include access to a pension scheme, a share-save scheme, free food during shifts and staff discounts.

According to the supermarket, those discounts alone can help workers save more than £600 a year on an £80 weekly shop, a perk that effectively stretches wages further at a time when grocery bills remain high.

Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts said colleagues had been central to the company’s recent performance, including grocery market share growth over the past six Christmas trading periods.

He said the 5% increase reflected the business’s commitment to rewarding productivity and high standards of customer service.

The rise has also been welcomed by the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw).

General secretary Joanne Thomas said retail staff are key workers in their communities and “crucial to the success of the business”, adding that an above-inflation settlement was the right outcome following talks with the supermarket.

How to apply for jobs and careers at Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s regularly recruits for roles across its supermarkets, convenience stores, warehouses and head office teams. Vacancies range from in-store customer assistants and delivery drivers to management, technology and finance roles.

Jobseekers can search and apply online via the official Sainsbury’s Careers website. Applicants can filter roles by location, department and contract type, set up job alerts, and submit applications directly.

Many store-based roles offer flexible hours, making them popular with students, parents and those looking for part-time work, while longer-term career paths are available through management training and specialist schemes.
