First look as new charity shop superstore set to open in Leeds town

A new 6,000 sq ft charity shop superstore is opening its doors in Leeds this week.

St Gemma’s Hospice will open their new store on 45 Boroughgate, Otley, tomorrow (March 6) at 10am.

The superstore will be one of the charity’s 27 shops across Leeds, which generate more than £1 million to fund specialist palliative and end-of-life care for thousands of local patients and families each year.

It will feature a 99p concept area, an extensive books and media section, and curated fashion and homeware displays designed to appeal to a broader generation of charity shop customers.

The relocated Otley shop will launch with a week-long showcase of a striking fashion installation: the Corset Revival Project. The initiative sees discarded corsets transformed into one-of-a-kind artworks by designers and artists from around the world.

The customised corsets, which have been reimagined through themes of heritage, identity, and circular fashion, will be displayed in the shop before they are auctioned to raise vital funds for hospice care in Leeds.

Chris Davey, Retail Development Manager at St Gemma’s Hospice, sees the Corset Revival Project as a positive collaboration between sustainable fashion and the charity sector.

He said: “This partnership shows how creativity, sustainability and community can come together to support hospice care.

“Every item saved from waste and sold in our shops helps fund specialist care for local families.

“Opening our new Otley superstore with such a visually powerful and meaningful project feels like the perfect way to mark this next chapter.”

St Gemma’s Hospice is Yorkshire’s largest hospice and a world leader in palliative care research.

As an independent charity, it relies heavily on fundraising and retail income to sustain its services across Leeds.
