From fashion and discount chains to charity shops and gaming retailers, 2026 has already proved a tough year for the UK high street.

A mix of rising costs, weaker footfall and long-running shifts towards online shopping has pushed several well-known names to close stores, restructure their estates or enter administration.

Some chains are slimming down to focus on profitable locations, while others are fighting for survival altogether.

Below, we look at the major retailers that have shut stores so far this year, what’s driven those decisions, and what it means for shoppers as closures continue to ripple across towns and cities.

River Island

Late last year, River Island confirmed a significant downsizing of its UK estate, with over 30 stores closing by the end of January as part of a broader restructuring strategy.

The fashion chain has faced falling footfall, high operating costs and a pivot toward online shopping, leading to underperforming physical stores.

CEO Ben Lewis said the closures form part of a plan to “ensure long-term viability” by focusing on the most profitable locations.

The Original Factory Shop

In late January, The Original Factory Shop entered administration, placing all of its 137 stores at risk.

Administrators pointed to difficult trading conditions, including weak consumer confidence, high inflation and rising labour and property costs, as key reasons for the collapse.

All stores will continue trading while rescue options are explored, but though no store closures have yet been announced, but the situation remains uncertain. Shoppers are advised to use gift cards and check returns policies while stores stay open.

Claire’s Accessories

Claire’s UK and Ireland also went into administration in early 2026, with final closures and clearance sales underway at many of its remaining branches.

Long-term financial struggles, including multi-million-pound losses over recent years and outdated store formats, have compounded Claire’s problems.

The business faced an £480m loan and declining high street sales, forcing a restructuring and closure programme.

Poundland

Poundland’s ongoing restructuring has continued into 2026, with dozens of its stores already closed and more phased closures scheduled.

After acquisition by an investment firm and a period of poor trading performance, Poundland is reducing its estate to cut costs, renegotiate rents and simplify its store portfolio. Lease expiries have accelerated closures in early 2026.

Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK confirmed the closure of nearly 90 of its shops across the country, including major towns like Leeds, Glasgow, Swansea and many more slated for shutdown in 2026.

The organisation says rising costs, changes in shopping habits and reduced volunteer capacity influenced its decision to scale back its high street footprint while focusing on larger charity hubs.

Schuh

Schuh has closed its flagship store at The Broadway Shopping Centre in Bradford.

The retailer described the move as a strategic realignment to focus on better performing sites, pointing to changes in consumer behaviour and the need to adapt resources more efficiently amid a tough retail environment.

Game

After years of declining sales, industry shifts toward digital downloads, and wholesale restructuring within Frasers Group, the standalone estate is being wound down. Concessions in other stores and online operations continue.
