The future of the former high street retail arm of WH Smith has come under the spotlight after its owner called in advisers to explore a major restructuring plan.
While aimed at strengthening the business, reports suggest that around 80 of TG Jones’ more than 450 stores could be at risk, raising concerns for shoppers and staff across the country, including in Yorkshire.
Modella Capital, which took control of the chain last year, confirmed it is working with advisers at Teneo to draw up a turnaround strategy.
The move comes amid a “tough” economic backdrop for UK retailers, with rising costs, weak consumer confidence, and challenging government policies placing pressure on high street businesses.

A spokesperson for Modella said: “The management of TG Jones is working hard to turn around this important retail business, and they are drawing on the best available advice in doing so.
“TG Jones’ management and Modella Capital are committed to building a sustainable future for this important UK business.”
Since taking over from WH Smith, which retained its more profitable travel stores, Modella has invested in refitting 14 TG Jones stores and plans further refurbishments throughout 2026.
But the chain has faced weaker trading in some locations, prompting discussions about potential closures as part of a broader plan to secure its future.
Could TG Jones stores close in Yorkshire?
While no final decisions have been made, industry reports suggest around 80 TG Jones stores are most vulnerable if a closure programme is pursued.
Advisory firm Teneo is also considering alternative measures, including potential financial support from WH Smith, leaving the possibility of closures uncertain.
For Yorkshire shoppers, this could mean changes in local store availability, though the company has emphasised that its priority is to maintain a sustainable retail presence wherever possible.
Modella recently placed Claire’s Accessories and The Original Factory Shop into administration, affecting more than 2,500 employees across both chains.
Despite these challenges, the firm remains focused on stabilising TG Jones, which it purchased for around £76 million and rebranded last year.
For now, Yorkshire residents can expect TG Jones to continue trading while the business explores its options.
