- Currently, fewer than 1 in 25 drivers are under 30, and diversity is low
- Young recruits will now have access to trainee programmes and apprenticeships
- The UK will join countries like Germany, Switzerland, and Australia where younger drivers are common
Exciting news for young people thinking about life on the rails - from June 30, 2026, 18-year-olds in the UK will be able to become train drivers.
The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced plans to lower the minimum age from 20, opening the door to a career that has long been out of reach for school leavers.
The move comes amid growing concerns about the number of drivers approaching retirement. By 2030, around a quarter of train drivers are expected to retire, and currently fewer than one in 25 are under 30.
Women make up just one in nine drivers, and less than 13% are from ethnic minority backgrounds. By welcoming younger recruits, the industry hopes to attract a more diverse workforce and secure the future of Great British Railways.

Rail Minister Lord Hendy highlighted the opportunities the change brings: “Lowering the minimum age for train drivers is a significant step forward for young people across Britain.
“This change will open doors for those wanting to move straight into the workplace, giving a younger generation the chance to build rewarding careers in the railway, whether that’s in freight or passenger services.”
From June 30, the UK will align with countries such as Switzerland, Germany, and Australia, where younger drivers are already common.
The DfT also noted that 18-year-olds already operate Tube trains, trams, and even aircraft in the transport sector, making this change a natural step to level the playing field.
How to apply for train driver jobs
If you’re 18 or older and keen to get behind the controls, here’s how to start:
- Check eligibility: You’ll need a full UK driving licence and meet medical and eyesight standards.
- Look for trainee driver programmes: Major operators like Avanti West Coast, LNER, and Northern run apprenticeships and graduate schemes.
- Submit an application: These are usually online and may include aptitude tests, interviews, and assessment days.
- Complete training: Once accepted, trainees undergo classroom learning and practical driving experience.
- Start your career: On completion, you’ll be qualified to operate passenger or freight trains, often with competitive salaries and clear paths for progression.
With almost a million young people currently not in education, employment, or training, this is a rare chance to launch a skilled, well-paid career right out of school.
