A major home improvement retailer is gearing up for a major expansion that could create more than 2,000 jobs, offering a potential boost for jobseekers in Yorkshire.
DIY chain Wickes has revealed plans to grow its store network from around 230 sites to 300 nationwide in the coming years.
As part of that push, it expects to significantly increase the pace of new openings, with four to five stores planned this year before accelerating to at least 10 a year from 2028.
For shoppers, the expansion could mean better access to stores and upgraded layouts, as Wickes also rolls out a large-scale refurbishment programme. Between 15 and 20 stores are set for refreshes this year, rising to at least 20 annually from 2028.

The growth plans come as the company reported improving financial performance. Underlying pre-tax profits rose 14.4% to £49.9 million in the year to late December, while total sales climbed 5.9%.
Statutory profits more than doubled compared with the previous year, highlighting a strong recovery despite ongoing cost pressures.
Chief executive David Wood said the decision to ramp up investment reflects confidence in the retailer’s store model and long-term returns. The expansion, he added, will bring Wickes’ to more communities while supporting thousands of new roles.
But the retailer noted that trading conditions remain mixed. Sales growth slowed slightly towards the end of the year, and demand for outdoor DIY products has been affected by poor weather in early 2026.
Indoor projects and its design and installation services have continued to perform more strongly.
