Leeds high school and sixth form to consider sale of 'sloping ground' behind sports hall

A leading high school and sixth form in Leeds is considering selling a plot of “sloping ground” behind its sport hall.

Temple Moor High School and Sixth Form in Halton is inviting residents to share their views on plans to sell a small piece of land on its site.

The 1,500m2 plot, located on sloping ground behind the sports hall, has been unused for many years and is no longer suitable for lessons, sports or student activities. Although the land forms part of the wider school grounds, its gradient and position mean it cannot safely or practically be used in day-to-day school life.

School leaders say selling the land would allow the site to be improved in ways that directly benefit students. Any proceeds from a sale would be reinvested into capital projects, including better accessibility for people with disabilities, upgrades to CCTV systems, and modernisation of ICT equipment.

These priorities are part of the school’s wider commitment to driving ongoing improvement and ensuring its facilities meet the needs of students and staff.

While the land’s location next to existing roads and utilities could make it attractive for future development, the school emphasises that the current consultation is not related to any housing plans or specific proposals. Any future use of the land would require a separate planning process with Leeds City Council, which would include its own period of public consultation.

The school has now opened a public consultation to gather views from residents, parents and local stakeholders on whether it should be permitted to sell the land. Feedback can be submitted via email to [email protected] with the subject line “Consultation Feedback”.

A public meeting will take place at the school on April 30 at 3.30pm, giving community members the opportunity to find out more about the proposal and ask questions in person. Places can be booked by emailing [email protected] using the subject line “Meeting Attendance”.

The consultation will remain open until 11 May at 9am, after which all responses will be included in the school’s submission to the Department for Education.
