Leeds primary school receives global recognition five years after being placed in 'special measures'
‘Our staff, pupils, families and wider community have worked incredibly hard’
A Leeds primary school has received global recognition - five years after it was placed into ‘special measures.’
Alder Tree Primary Academy, located on Potternewton Mount, Meanwood, has achieved global recognition for educational excellence after being awarded High Performance Learning (HPL) World Class School status.
Part of the White Rose Academies Trust, the prestigious accreditation places the school amongst an elite group of institutions recognised internationally for delivering exceptional educational outcomes and ensuring every child has the opportunity to achieve highly.
The award marks the latest milestone in a remarkable transformation journey that has seen Alder Tree progress from a ‘special measures’ Ofsted report in 2020, when it was known as Mill Field Primary Academy, to becoming a nationally and internationally recognised centre of excellence under the leadership of Principal Kate Burton.

“This award is a proud moment for everyone connected with Alder Tree Primary Academy,” said Principal Burton. “Our staff, pupils, families and wider community have worked incredibly hard over the past five years and this recognition reflects that collective effort.
“When we began this journey, we had a clear vision for what our school could become. We believed that every child, regardless of background or circumstance, deserved the opportunity to access a world-class education. To now receive international recognition for that work is incredibly rewarding.”
The school joined White Rose Academies Trust in December 2020, with Burton taking up post as Principal in January 2021. Since then, Alder Tree Primary has undergone sustained improvement driven by a clear vision, ambitious expectations and an unwavering belief that background should never determine a child's future success.
Serving a community that faces significant socioeconomic challenges, the school has become a powerful example of what can be achieved when high-quality education, strong leadership and community support come together.
The school's transformation has already attracted national attention. Earlier this year, Alder Tree Primary received recognition from Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson for the exceptional achievement of its disadvantaged pupils.
Alder Tree also secured a Good Ofsted judgement in 2023 and is now celebrating international recognition through the HPL World Class School Award.
“What makes this achievement particularly special is seeing the confidence, ambition and success of our pupils,” Principal Burton added. “They rise to challenges every day, show incredible resilience and curiosity, and continue to demonstrate what can be achieved when children are given the right support, encouragement and opportunities.
“This recognition celebrates how far we have come, but it also inspires us to continue striving for even greater success on behalf of our pupils and community.”
This is particularly significant as Alder Tree Primary was among the first primary schools to undertake the High Performance Learning accreditation journey, helping demonstrate that an approach adopted by leading schools across the world can be transformative within a primary setting.
The HPL World Class School Award is reserved for schools that demonstrate world-class standards in teaching, learning, leadership and pupil outcomes. Schools awarded this status are recognised as being amongst the very best educational institutions globally.
Following its accreditation visit, HPL praised the school for successfully embedding High Performance Learning throughout its culture, curriculum and wider community.
