'A remarkable achievement': Leeds school earns rare national recognition for its geography department
Only 13 schools across the UK were awarded the accolade last year
Guiseley School’s Geography Department has secured a rare national distinction after being awarded Centre of Excellence status by the Geographical Association.
The school also received the Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM), retaining the accolade it first secured last year. The department previously won the award four years ago under its former Head of Department.

Only 13 schools across the UK were awarded Centre of Excellence status last year. The distinction is reserved for geography departments that serve as hubs of outstanding practice, provide educational leadership and inspire the wider teaching community.
The SGQM separately recognises quality and innovation in geography teaching.

Guiseley School’s geography team submitted a comprehensive portfolio to achieve the two awards.
It showcased an ambitious and inclusive curriculum designed to develop deep enquiry and global awareness, as well as fieldwork opportunities through which students explore human and physical processes beyond the classroom.

A spokesperson for Guiseley School said: “The Geographical Association grants Centre of Excellence status to departments demonstrating sustained success, active leadership, and an unwavering commitment to advancing geography education.
“Securing both accolades highlights not only the department’s high academic standards, but also a continuous drive for innovation that ensures geography is accessible and engaging for all learners.
“This recognition reflects the daily culture of passion, expertise, and dedication that defines the Guiseley School Geography Department. Congratulations to the entire team on this remarkable, nationally recognised achievement.”
