'We've always been competitive': Leeds twins scoop same university spot after exceptional A-Level results

The twins achieved top grades in the same subjects

A pair of Leeds twins are heading to the same university to study the same course after achieving an exceptional set of A-level results.

Alex and Harry, both students at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), have secured places to study philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) at Durham University.

The twins achieved top grades in the same subjects, with Alex securing A*s in business, government and politics, maths and his Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), alongside an A in economics.

Harry achieved A*s in business, economics and government and politics, as well as As in maths and his EPQ.

Alex said: “I suppose that Harry and I were always likely to study the same course due to our shared interests.

“However, we did decide to apply for different colleges!”

The pair also share a passion for sport, particularly football and cricket, and admit they have always been competitive with each other.

Alex added: “We’ve always been very competitive – which is good because it makes sure that neither of us is slacking!”

Alex’s achievements at GSAL include being listed for Cambridge University’s R.A. Butler Prize, an award for essays in politics and international studies.

He also led the school’s business and economics society.

Meanwhile, Harry was a finalist in the Economics World Cup and coaches an under-nine football team.

Michael Hall, principal at GSAL, said: “Alex and Harry have made a huge contribution to school life at GSAL since joining us for sixth form and we know they will go on to do the same at university.

“We congratulate them on their excellent results and wish them every success for the future.”

This year, 58 per cent of A-levels at GSAL were awarded A or A* grades.

Fifteen pupils achieved at least three As, while seven students achieved As in at least three subjects as well as an A* in their EPQ.

The school said this year’s cohort also includes three aspiring footballers, a young social change campaigner and one of the top young mathematicians in the country.
