Leeds student and top mathematician secures spot at Cambridge with remarkable A-Level results

One of the country’s top young mathematicians is celebrating an outstanding set of A-level results after securing five A* grades.

Andrew Hsu, a student at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), will head to Cambridge University in October to study computer science after achieving the remarkable results.

The 18-year-old’s passion for computers began at a young age, when he started customising his own games.

“I’ve always been drawn to problem-solving and logical thinking, and competitive programming has strengthened that interest over time,” he said.

Andrew’s achievements have seen him establish himself as one of the country’s most talented young mathematicians.

In 2026, he represented the UK at the Western European Olympiad in Informatics in Luxembourg, where he won a bronze medal.

He has also achieved distinctions in the British Mathematical Olympiad for the past three years.

Andrew placed in the top 20 per cent of participants on Harvard’s CS50 course, a renowned and rigorous introduction to computer science.

While he is still unsure about his future career, Andrew is interested in using computer science to tackle problems in everyday life.

His Extended Project Qualification explored how the development of quantum computers could affect the security systems protecting information sent over the internet.

“I’ve always enjoyed creating apps which make life easier for people,” he added.

GSAL principal Michael Hall said Andrew was an “exceptional mathematician and a dedicated student”.

He added: “We are so proud of his achievements and grateful for his contribution to school life through running the school’s maths society.

“We wish him every success in the future.”

This year, 58 per cent of A-levels at GSAL were awarded A or A* grades.

Fifteen pupils achieved at least three As, while seven achieved As in at least three subjects alongside an A* in their EPQ.

The school’s successful cohort also includes three aspiring footballers, twins heading to the same prestigious university to study the same course and a young social change campaigner.
