Woodkirk Academy unveil £75m plans to open new sixth form and sports building

Work is scheduled to begin in Spring 2027

A secondary school in Leeds has unveiled plans to open a new multi-million pound sixth form and sports facility.

Woodkirk Academy, located on Rein Road, Tingley, has unveiled its plans for a new £75 million three-storey teaching block and sports facilities.

The project will provide outstanding new learning spaces alongside enhanced facilities for performance, sport and fitness, and Sixth Form students, creating an environment that will benefit current and future students alike.

Lead by construction partner Willmott Dixon, work is scheduled to begin in Spring 2027, starting with the construction of a new 3G sports pitch.

An academy spokesperson said: “This is an enormously exciting opportunity for Woodkirk Academy. While our buildings will change, our focus will remain exactly the same: providing the very best education and opportunities for every young person.

“The rebuild will allow us to do this in exceptional new facilities and represents a lasting investment not only in the school, but in the community we serve.

“Throughout the project, the operational school site will be carefully separated from the construction area. The safety and safeguarding of students, staff and visitors will remain our absolute priority, with arrangements designed to ensure that the high standards currently in place are maintained throughout the rebuild.”

Importantly, the new school building will be constructed before the existing buildings are demolished. This means that there will be no material impact on the day-to-day education of students currently studying at Woodkirk Academy.

The new school building is planned to be ready for occupation from September 2029, after which work will continue to complete the wider site. The entire project is expected to be finished approximately 18 months later.

Sixth Form pupils at Woodkirk moved into a temporary teaching block in September 2023 after crumbling RAAC concrete was discovered on site.
