Amber heat alert issued for Leeds with danger to life warning - when to stay indoors

Temperatures are expected to soar across Leeds this week ☀️

The hot weather is expected to continue across Leeds this week, with the Met Office predicting temperatures could reach a scorching 35C.

The soaring temperatures combined with high humidity have seen the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issue an amber heat health alert across Yorkshire and The Humber until 11 pm on Friday, June 26, with significant impact expected.

The Met Office have also issued an Amber extreme heat warning for Leeds. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates said: “Temperatures are forecast to climb to 35C on Tuesday and Wednesday. By Thursday, temperatures are currently forecast to drop slightly, with a peak of 34C more confined to the southeast of England.

“Importantly, high humidity will also mean this feels close, warmer and more uncomfortable for many. Tropical nights, where the temperature doesn’t drop below 20C, are also likely for some, especially in urban areas.”

What does an amber weather warning mean?

The Met Office have issued an amber extreme heat warning for Leeds from midnight on Wednesday (June 24) to 11.59 pm on Thursday (June 25).

The warning highlights the potential health impacts the heatwave could have for those who are vulnerable to extreme heat, as well as the potential to impact the wider population on things including transport, energy, water supply and water safety incidents.

When should you stay indoors?

The sun is strongest from 11 am to 3 pm; if possible, it’s recommended to stay indoors during this time. If you have to go outside during the hottest part of the day, stay cool by keeping in the shade, wearing lightweight, light-coloured clothing and sipping water regularly to stay hydrated.

You can find out more information on how to stay cool during a heatwave at NHS.UK.
