'Small steps help in a big way': Charity urges Leeds locals to take action for Mental Health Awareness Week
‘Taking small steps can all help’
Leeds Mind is calling on people across the city to take action for Mental Health Awareness Week 2026, taking place from May 11-17.

The local mental health charity is encouraging residents, communities and employers to use the week to take simple, positive steps to support mental wellbeing, whether that’s reaching out to someone they care about, seeking support for themselves, or creating healthier environments at work.
This year’s national theme, Take Action, reflects Leeds Mind’s ongoing message that even small actions can make a meaningful difference to how people feel.
Emily Cotter, marketing and communications officer for Leeds Mind, said: “Mental Health Awareness Week this year is about turning awareness into action.

"And you don’t have to do something big; checking in with someone, starting a conversation at work or taking small measures such as screen breaks can all help improve wellbeing.
“If you are ready to seek support, Leeds has so many charities and community organisations that offer all sorts of support, including Leeds Mind’s mental wellbeing services.”
Leeds Mind is reminding people that a wide range of mental health and wellbeing support is available locally all year round.
This includes counselling, creative wellbeing opportunities, help with employment and money worries, and community‑based groups.
People who are unsure where to start can contact Linking Leeds, the city’s social prescribing service, or visit MindWell Leeds, the online directory for adult mental health and wellbeing support in the city.
Leeds Mind is asking individuals to take one simple action during the week, such as getting outside or checking in with someone you trust.
Local businesses are also being encouraged to take action by sharing wellbeing messages with staff, investing in mental health training, and creating working environments where people feel able to talk openly about mental health.
As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, Leeds Mind will be at a health and wellbeing marketplace at Kirkgate Market on Wednesday May 13, from 10am–2pm, offering information and signposting to local mental health and wellbeing support. The event is hosted by Touchstone and Forum Central, alongside 25 other local service providers working across Leeds.
Leeds Mind will also be running a community engagement and signposting stall at Aire Park on Thursday May 14, from 11.30am–2pm, giving people the chance to speak to the team and find out more about support available in their local area.
With demand for mental health services continuing to rise, Leeds Mind says Mental Health Awareness Week is an important reminder that support is available, and that taking action together can help build a healthier, more connected city.
