A family who are navigating the unimaginable are asking for help to reach their dream target of £10,000 for The Prince of Wales Hospice.

Katy Powell and her family are raising funds to give back to the hospice that has given them comfort, dignity, and peace during the most difficult time of their lives.

Ten weeks ago, Katy Powell’s life changed dramatically.

During a family holiday in Majorca, the 36-year-old mum to Noah,16, Dylan, 13, Edith, eight and Anna, one, was diagnosed with metastatic bowel cancer.

What began as vague symptoms quickly became a devastating reality.

Back home in Allerton Bywater, the Powell family found themselves navigating hospital stays, tests, and uncertainty.

Katy had just 10 days at home after her diagnosis before she was referred to The Prince of Wales Hospice for palliative care.

Daniel, Katy’s husband, said: “From the moment we arrived, everything changed.

"The staff really listen. Their attentiveness is incredible.”

Katy’s room at the hospice is now more than just a bed, it’s a sanctuary filled with family photos, Edith’s drawings, and colourful blankets.

Friends and family visit freely, with no restrictions.

The care goes far beyond the clinical. The hospice’s Wellbeing Team has wrapped around the whole family, offering support Katy never expected.

Katy said: “I didn’t know this side of hospice care existed. They’ve thought of everything not just for me, but for all of us.”

For the children, a Halloween party was arranged, with costumes, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Katy, a teaching assistant, and Daniel are well-known in their community and decided they wanted to give something back to the hospice.

They set up a fundraiser in partnership with The Matthew22 Fund, which will donate the money raised to The Prince of Wales Hospice as a grant.

So far, the total has surpassed £6,000, with hopes of reaching £10,000 to help other families experience the same compassion and care.

Daniel said, “We can’t put into words how much we appreciate the hospice and the team.”

Katy wrote on her fundraising page: “I’m now in a lovely hospice, managing my pain and keeping comfortable until the time comes.”
