'Do not feed them to babies': Warning to parents as Nestle recalls baby formula over toxin fears

• Nestlé has issued an urgent product recall for several infant and follow-on formulas.

Nestlé has issued an urgent recall for several infant formulas and follow-on formulas because they may contain the bacterium cereulide toxin.

If the toxin is found in products, it means they are not safe to consume and can lead to symptoms including nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

In a customer notice, Nestlé said: “The safety and well-being of babies is our absolute priority. As a precautionary measure, Nestlé is voluntarily recalling specific batches of our SMA infant formula and follow-on formula.

“We understand that this news may cause concern for parents, and we sincerely apologise for any concern or inconvenience caused to parents, caregivers and customers.”

What is Cereulide?

Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. If found in products, it means they are unsafe to consume.

It is highly heat stable, meaning it is unlikely to be destroyed by cooking, boiling water, or when making infant milk. If consumed, it can lead to a rapid onset of symptoms including nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
