Christine has backed the launch of cancer charity Treatment Bag at Leeds Cancer Centre, part of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, where free bags packed with practical essentials and comforting treats are being introduced for patients undergoing treatment.
The charity was inspired by a simple gesture during chemotherapy, when one of its trustees received a bag of apples from another patient - an unexpected act of kindness that inspired support for others facing treatment.
Christine Talbot said: "Having experienced cancer treatment at St James's myself, I know it's often the smallest acts of kindness that stay with you.
“That's why I think Treatment Bag is such a wonderful idea. I'm delighted to support its Yorkshire launch and hope people across the region will embrace it, because together we can help many more people feel supported as they begin treatment."
Since launching, Treatment Bag has donated almost 3,000 bags through partnerships with 10 NHS trusts across the South of England, as well as donating Treatment Bags to three other cancer charities for the people they support.
Its expansion into Yorkshire marks the charity's first step into the North, with Leeds Cancer Centre becoming the first to introduce the bags. While there are not yet enough resources to offer every patient a bag, the ambition is to build local support so that many more people across Yorkshire can benefit in the future.
Karen Henry, lead nurse for Leeds Cancer Centre, said: "We are really pleased to welcome Treatment Bag to Leeds Cancer Centre and thank everyone involved for this kind donation.
“Receiving a diagnosis of cancer is a difficult time, and being able to offer a little comfort can make such a difference.
“We are looking forward to working with Treatment Bag to help the charity grow so that more patients will be able to benefit in the future."
Lisa Stubbs, Northern Hub Lead for Treatment Bag, said: "Every bag is a simple reminder that someone is thinking of you at a time when you need it most.
“Seeing Treatment Bag arrive in Yorkshire is a major moment for the charity, and we're incredibly grateful to Leeds Cancer Centre at St James's Hospital for becoming the first in the North to introduce the bags and for welcoming us so warmly.
“Our hope is that, with the support of local people, schools, businesses and community groups, we can encourage fundraising to help grow this service so that many more patients across the North can benefit. With Leeds being one of the largest cancer centres in the North, it felt the natural place to begin."
