Wakefield care home rated inadequate again by CQC inspectors

A care home in Wakefield has once again been rated inadequate as inspectors find a distinct deterioration in care.

The West Ridings Care Home in Lofthouse, run by Advinia Care Homes Limited, was inspected in October by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Earlier it had been rated inadequate over safety and leadership, and in need of improvement over its effectiveness. Care ratings have since dipped.

Inspectors were called amid concerns over safeguarding, finding a "poor" leadership and risk management, meaning people were receiving unsafe care.

This is "unacceptable" in a place they call home, said the North's deputy director of operations for adult social care, Victoria Marsden.

"Leaders were still placing people at risk of harm, and we continued to find issues with a high number of people experiencing falls, as well as people having skin tears and unexplained bruising which is very concerning," she said.

“People’s basic care needs still weren’t being met properly.

“Leaders didn’t make sure staff were stationed where they needed to be within the home to keep people safe.

“We have told leaders where we expect to see rapid improvements and will continue to monitor the home closely to keep people safe while that happens," she added.

"We will return to check on their progress and won’t hesitate to use our regulatory powers further if people still aren’t receiving the care they have a right to expect.”

The care home supports adults with dementia, mental health conditions and physical disabilities.

Among a summary of inspectors’ findings were concerns over the accuracy of care records, detection of risks, and administration of medicines.

The home was unable to support people going into the garden, take part in activities or access the community due to staff not being available, they added.
