A popular baby formula manufacturer has issued an urgent product recall after it may contain a toxin that can cause food poisoning.

It comes after Nestle issued a similar recall earlier this month, recalling 12 products over fears they may contain the bacterium cereulide toxin, which can cause symptoms including nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

The same toxin may also have contaminated Danone’s Aptamil Infant Formula. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is currently investigating the recalls, with contamination suspected to originate from a shared third-party ingredient supplier.

What is Cereulide?

Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. If consumed, it can lead to a rapid onset of symptoms including nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. It is highly heat-stable, meaning it is unlikely to be destroyed by cooking, boiling water, or when making infant milk.

What product is being recalled?

Danone has identified one product that might be contaminated with the toxin.

  • Aptamil First Infant Formula, pack size 800g, batch number 31-10-2026, best before October 31, 2026.

The item was sold from May to July 2025. If you have bought the affected product, do not feed it to babies. Even if your baby has not become unwell after consuming it, it is essential to stop using it and return it to the store it was purchased from for a full refund.

If you have fed this product to a baby and have any concerns about the potential health impact, seek advice from a healthcare professional.

For more information about the baby formula recall, you can contact the Aptamil careline at 0800 996 1000 or online at Apataclub.
