'We just want to know why': Heartbroken Pontefract family wait for answers over baby daughter's sudden death

Welcoming their happy and healthy baby girl to the world on December 15, a Pontefract couple could never have imagined the devastation that was to follow.

Tia Leach, 21, and Sam Kerner, 22, were excited with the arrival of baby Missy, a little sister for son Presley, four and Vienna, one.

But four short weeks later, while at home, Missy suddenly died.

Missy was born at 37 weeks Pinderfields Hospital, with blue eyes and lots of red hair.

"All the scans beforehand were fine," Tia said.

"She was discharged the same day from observation and was able to go home the following night.

“Everything was going so well.

"Then four weeks later, her colour just dropped and she turned white."

Tia said she began CPR and she shouted to a neighbour, who works at a nursery, to help.

But Missy died on January 17.

Tia said: "Nothing can prepare you for that - never could I imagine having my baby that day, that she wouldn't be here in just four short weeks."

Tia and Sam are now waiting to find out what happened to their daughter and have been told it could be up to 12 months before they get an answer.

They opted to send biopsies taken from Missy to a teaching hospital with the hope they can help.

"We just don't know if she was poorly, if she was born with something wrong...we just don't know,” said Tia.

"We know we can't change what happened, we just want to know what did happen and why.”

"You never think when you're in hospital having a baby that in no time at all your baby isn't here anymore,” Tia said.

"We never ever thought we'd be planning her funeral.”
