Review: Honda CR-V e:PHEV

The Honda CR-V successfully blends practicality, efficiency and comfort, says Julie Marshall

The family-friendly Honda CR-V has been a staple for more than three decades and is now in its sixth generation. The current version, launched in 2023, is offered exclusively as either a full hybrid (e:HEV) or a plug-in hybrid (e:PHEV).

We recently tested the plug-in hybrid e:PHEV and found it exceeded expectations. Visually, it strikes an appealing balance: what could have been a boxy SUV has been styled into something sleek and sporty, without sacrificing its practicality as a capable family car.

Inside, there’s generous space for passengers, and every seat is supportive and comfortable. The elevated driving position offers a commanding view of the road, complemented by excellent all-round visibility.

Parking is made easy thanks to front and rear sensors and a rear-view camera, while the Advance trim upgrades this to a 360-degree camera system—leaving little room for parking mishaps.

Driver comfort is equally well catered for, with eight-way electrically adjustable seats that include a memory function. The digital driver display is clear and customisable, allowing you to prioritise the information you want to see, and Advance models also benefit from a head-up display.

The e:PHEV delivers up to 50 miles of electric-only driving before the petrol engine steps in. For those with access to home or workplace charging and relatively short daily commutes, it’s entirely possible to complete most journeys without using any petrol.

Alternatively, the full hybrid version is self-charging, drawing energy from regenerative braking and requiring no plug-in charging at all.

Under the bonnet, our test car featured a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 181bhp, driving the front wheels. While the engine can be heard under harder acceleration, the noise never becomes intrusive, even at motorway speeds—though some wind noise is noticeable at higher speeds. The official 0–62mph time is 9.4 seconds, with a top speed of 121mph.

On the road, the ride feels firm yet comfortable, smoothing out speed bumps and potholes without unsettling occupants. Small thoughtful touches stand out too, such as illuminated charging ports and controls for easier use at night.

Speaking of charging, the CR-V is well equipped with four USB ports—one Type-A and one Type-C in the front, plus two Type-C ports in the rear. There’s also a fast wireless phone charger, complete with its own cooling fan to prevent overheating.

Overall, the latest CR-V successfully blends practicality, efficiency and comfort in a stylish and well-equipped package.
