Below Stairs review: I tried this hidden Leeds cocktail bar - and didn't want to leave
Finding Below Stairs feels a little like being let in on a secret.
Hidden beneath street level in the city centre, the entrance is easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, which only adds to the charm once you step inside. The sense of discovery is part of the appeal, and it quickly becomes clear why this tucked-away cocktail bar has built such a strong reputation.
A thoughtful touch sets the tone as soon as you arrive. Guests are welcomed with a small complimentary drink, a clever way to tempt the palate while you browse the cocktail menu. The current menu is built around the idea of “small joys”, a theme that allows the bartenders’ creativity to really shine and turns each drink into something memorable.

We started with “Handbag Snacks”, a playful twist on an Old Fashioned featuring butterscotch and finished with its own homemade butterscotch candy garnish.
Alongside it came “Licking the Spoon”, a rum-based cocktail inspired by the nostalgic flavours of a Victoria sponge cake. The drink is served with a small spoon carrying the same flavours as the cocktail itself, created from the by-products of the drink, a clever and surprisingly satisfying extra touch.
To accompany the drinks, we ordered some Iberico ham crisps, which were absolutely delicious and worked brilliantly alongside the cocktails. For two cocktails and the snack the bill came to £34, which felt very much in line with other cocktail bars in the city and well worth it given the level of care and creativity involved.

Inside, the atmosphere strikes a perfect balance. The room is softly lit, the music is well chosen, and the space feels lively while still allowing conversation to flow easily. It has an intimate feel that works just as well for catching up with friends as it does for settling in for a relaxed evening of drinks.
Service throughout the visit was exceptional. Staff were welcoming, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what they do, guiding us through the menu while keeping everything relaxed and friendly.
Although cocktails are the main attraction, the beer and wine selection is also impressive, ensuring there is something for everyone. Just be sure to book if you’re planning a weekend visit, as this hidden gem fills up quickly.
