Danny Malin : I bought an expensive steak from Miller and Carter to take away - my review

Danny Malin: This week Danny bought an expensive steak to takeaway from Miller and Carter - but would he do it again?

I won’t lie, I’ve never bought an expensive steak to takeaway. As a former butcher I’m particular about my steak but I appreciate that not everyone wants to make it at home.

I’ve heard people rave about Miller & Carter steakhouses, and when I found out they do takeaway I had to try it out. The only down side is I forgot a knife and fork.

Nonetheless t’old camerman found me some wooden cutlery but I still had to eat most of it by hand.

Miller & Carter’s steaks are served with parsley butter or signature butter, a balsamic-glazed tomato, onion loaf, a choice of steak sauce, lettuce wedge dressing and a side.

I chose the rib eye with beef dripping gravy on the side.

For starters I had pork belly which reminded me of Christmas. It was messy but delicious.

For the sides I had the Stilton and blue cheese wedge, beef brisket and short rib mac ‘n cheese and sautéed greens and chantenay carrots.

The steak was bang on - cooked to perfection, and the beef dripping gravy dip was full of flavour, although - a good steak doesn’t need sauce. The beef brisket and short rib mac ‘n cheese didn’t look appetising at all. Before even trying it, it was served looking like I’d chewed it and spat it back out in the pot. The taste was a letdown too.

The onion loaf was nice and I also had some vegetables for good measure.

The sautéd greens were al dente fresh but the chantenay carrots were soggy and inedible. It was nice but not worth £55 plus they charge the same to eat in as they do to takeaway.

I went to Miller & Carter in Manchester but they have steak houses all over Yorkshire. I know these guys were awarded the ‘masters of steak,’ but if I was going to choose anywhere to buy a steak dinner for a treat - it would have to be HABBIBI in Leeds.

We went last Valentine’s Day and I loved it so I’m sure I’ll be booking my wife and I in there again this Valentine’s even though she’s vegetarian. Luckily they also have options for her.

Fortunately she even loves joining me for lunch at Estabulo, for the salad bar, if I’m wanting something meaty and quick.

If I’m having a steak at home it’ll always be fresh from Malcolm Michaels butcher’s or eating out at HABBIBI LEEDS.
