Danny Malin: I’ve eaten ice cream across Yorkshire - but this timeless seafront spot is still my favourite
Danny Malin shares his favourite spots for ice cream 🍦
From lemon tops in Redcar to ice cream floats on Scarborough’s South Bay, ice cream in Yorkshire goes way beyond the Mr Whippy ‘99’ variety from my childhood.
Ice cream and gelato have definitely skyrocketed in price, sadly, but definitely for the better in flavour and options.
I’ve had some amazing ice cream and gelatos from Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley, Farmer Copley’s in Pontefract inside their making shed, and William’s Den in North Cave near Hull.

When it comes to a family day out, Billy Bob’s play barn is the ultimate place for ice cream in their retro American style, and with the outdoor play barns in Skipton.
That said, Yorkshire’s ice cream trade started and in my opinion remains the strongest along the Yorkshire coast, where you’ve got Pacittos in Redcar, the home of the lemon top, Trillo’s of Whitby, which does the classic black ice cream for the Goth Weekends, and for me, Scarborough is the epicentre of ice cream.
This brings me to my favourite timeless destination on the seafront.
Since 1945, Alonzi's Harbour Bar has been serving and making its own ice cream from its traditional diner in the South Bay. The diner still has a 1950s style, serving banana splits, ice cream floats, and a range of traditional sundaes.
It’s a real institution with the servers all dressed in canary yellow.
Best of all, the ice cream is still homemade and they use old-fashioned ingredients. It’s heaven. The banana splits and sundaes are to die for - all washed down with a mug of tea.
You can’t beat the experience here.
