Danny Malin: My love letter to Yorkshire food - and why it tells the story of our incredible folk
In is latest column, Danny Malin writes a love letter to Yorkshire ❤️
Yorkshire is an epic region that lives up to its title as God's own county.
Our heritage is steeped in the agricultural industry - from farm to fork.
We’ve got some amazing farms in the region. I love a family day out at Cannon Hall Farm in Cawthorne, Barnsley and Farmer Farmer Copleys in Pontefract.

Last time at Copley’s, we tried the Moo Cafe, where I had a huge and delicious hog roast sandwich. When the weather’s nice, it’s worth popping to their gelateria.
The White Bull restaurant at Cannon Hall Farm is incredible. It does banging breakfasts, hearty lunches, and Sunday dinners. The meat is from their farm shop next door. In the shop, they sell the best home-made pies, mushy peas and gravy.
Thanks to our farms, we have some of the best produce locally. Just down the road is Wortley Wagyu, which has its own street food stall as well as supplying local restaurants.
One of my favourite places to eat out is The Bothy at Wentworth Garden Centre, because they source food primarily from local suppliers, utilising seasonal produce.
The garden centre is actually built on the former 18th-century kitchen gardens of Wentworth Woodhouse. The ‘big house’ also serves up awesome home-made food in Butler’s Pantry café, based on the ground floor for a hearty Irish stew and jacket potato, as well as The Camellia House for a treat.
Yorkshire’s vast landscape means we can grow, catch and rear some of the finest produce.
From fish and chips with scampi by the coast to a range of cheese, including Wensleydale.
We’ve got some incredible food courts from Cambridge Street Collective in Sheffield to Trinity Kitchen in Leeds and, of course, my Packhorse Kitchen in Huddersfield.
What’s brilliant is that each vendor is independent with a story behind them.
It’s the Yorkshire folk who harvest and cook food, delivering some of the best culinary experiences in the world.
It’s also Yorkshire people who make the region and the food what it is.
