Danny Malin: I tried this West Yorkshire steakhouse for a Sunday dinner - and it got my top marks

With Mother’s Day and Easter around the corner, I wanted to share my best spots for a Sunday Dinner.

Normally, Sunday is my rest and homemade roast day, but it is nice to go out for a treat with the family.

I’m lucky I get to travel around reviewing everything from takeaways to high-end food on Danny Vs Food and on the Danny & Gary channel. That said, Sunday dinners remain my favourite meal.

While my wife makes mine at home, there are some amazing places where I recommend trying something different.

I do love a traditional pub lunch, too.

Recently, I returned to Three Flames steakhouse for an early Mother’s Day Sunday dinner for my mum and wife. The steakhouse is just behind Abdul’s in Wakefield, off Junction 41 of the M1.

My mum likes a traditional Sunday dinner, while my wife Sophie is a vegetarian and likes something different. Having reviewed this place and knowing they have a range of options for meat eaters and veggies alike, I knew it’d be a safe bet.

We started off with an onion flower, which tastes like a huge gourmet onion ring to share.

My mum, dad and I had creamy Parmesan sautéed mushrooms with bread to start as part of the Sunday set menu. Sophie devoured a plate of hummus with flatbread.

We were also surprised with four pieces of steak grilled at the table with a blow torch. It was a fun and tasty bit of entertainment, even my Dad enjoyed the creamy wasabi topping, which was a surprise for the old man. For the mains, I had lamb cutlets with all the trimmings and my parents had sirloin steak cooked to order.

Sophie had a cauliflower steak and our daughter Athena, also a vegetarian, had a kids’ vegan burger with chips. Sophie and Athena ended up sharing there’s. As a special treat staff also served us a huge tomahawk steak. I’d rated it top marks, and on a Sunday it still lived up to that.

For a date, I love taking my wife to HABBIBI Leeds for a Middle Eastern-inspired Sunday dinner.

From roasted prime Wagyu to sumac roasted chicken with all the trimmings for me, and grilled aubergine for her.

Another recent find when it came to an epic Sunday dinner was The Old Liquor Store in the historic Grade II listed former Terry's Chocolate Factory in York. Everything was done by a team of chefs from a fresh prawn cocktail to start with to a huge Sunday roast with a giant Yorkshire pudding alongside some of the most delicious cauliflower cheese I’ve ever had.

You also can’t beat a traditional roast from Cannon Hall Farm. Those guys know how to serve some proper grub.
